Validate a bank account number in IBAN format using our free tool
An IBAN account number is a unique international bank account identifier used for bank transfers. The IBAN format consists of a country code, two check digits, and a bank account number. It is important to ensure the IBAN account number is correct to facilitate seamless bank transfers.
To validate your IBAN account number, simply enter it in the corresponding field and click 'Validate IBAN'. Our IBAN validator will check if the entered account number is valid and provide information about the country, bank entity, its BIC code, and the validity of the account number.

What is an IBAN number?
IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number — the international standard for identifying bank accounts. It was created to simplify cross-border transfers within the SEPA zone and beyond. Today it is mandatory in 86 countries and allows banks to verify the destination account before executing a payment.
An IBAN does not store any balance or personal information — it is solely an account identifier. Its fixed structure allows its format to be validated before sending any transfer, avoiding rejections and return fees.
How does IBAN validation work?
Our validator applies the official MOD-97 algorithm defined by ISO 13616. The process checks three things: that the country code is valid, that the check digits are correct, and that the length of the number matches the standard for that country (which varies between 15 and 34 characters).
A positive validation confirms that the IBAN has the correct format. It does not guarantee that the account is active, but it does mean it will not be immediately rejected by the receiving bank.
IBAN structure
Every IBAN consists of three parts: the country code (2 letters), the check digits (2 numbers) and the BBAN or national account number (up to 30 characters, varying by country). For example, a UK IBAN follows the format GB00 AAAA 0000 0000 0000 00.
Common errors our validator detects
The validator automatically catches the most frequent mistakes before you send a payment:
- Hidden spaces pasted from an email or PDF
- Incorrect length for the indicated country
- Check digits that fail the MOD-97 calculation
- Unrecognised or non-existent country code in the IBAN standard
- Disallowed characters (accented letters, special symbols)
